Mumbai: Zoom Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZM) has announced the expansion of its collaboration with Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) to strengthen digital inclusion efforts in Karnataka. The initiative aims to improve access to digital skills, tools, and economic opportunities in remote and underserved districts.

Building on earlier collaborations in Telangana and Madhya Pradesh, the latest phase will support the establishment of 55 community-led Digital Access Centers across Karnataka. These centers are designed to function as local hubs for digital connectivity, skills development, and inclusive economic participation.

According to the companies, the centers are expected to train more than 16,500 micro-entrepreneurs and artisans while reaching over 110,000 citizens, enabling broader participation in India’s growing digital economy.

“Access to technology is the foundation for inclusive growth in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world, but it is human connection that turns access into opportunity,” said Aparna Bawa, Chief Operating Officer, Zoom. “Through our continued collaboration with DEF, we are helping communities build the skills and confidence needed to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.”

Participants will use digital tools, including Zoom’s AI-first open work platform, to connect with markets, access services, develop digital storefronts, collaborate virtually, and expand their businesses online.

A significant focus of the Karnataka initiative is supporting artisans and micro-entrepreneurs associated with Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged industries. Through structured training in digital marketing, storytelling, and virtual collaboration, the program aims to help participants expand market access while preserving regional crafts and heritage.

Founded in 2002, DEF works to bridge India’s digital divide through a community-driven model led by women social entrepreneurs known as SoochnaPreneurs. The organization reports that it has reached more than 10,000 villages and served over 35 million people across India.

“Our continued collaboration with Zoom is helping bridge India’s digital divide while creating sustainable digital livelihoods,” said Osama Manzar, Founder and Director of Digital Empowerment Foundation. “By combining grassroots reach with technology resources, we aim to ensure that digital progress benefits marginalized communities.”

The Karnataka expansion builds on Zoom Cares’ broader philanthropic initiatives in India, including collaborations with Head Held High Foundation, CyberPeace Foundation, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Women’s Collective, and Goonj. In late 2025, Zoom announced a US$10 million three-year commitment to AI for Good initiatives focused on AI readiness and social impact.
