New Delhi: Vimag Labs has secured its fifth patent in India for its proprietary Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform, strengthening the company’s intellectual property portfolio as it advances the commercial deployment of its software-controlled, rare-earth-free electric motor technology.
The patent, titled “A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control,” covers the foundational architecture of the VMSM platform. Unlike conventional Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), which use fixed rare-earth magnets embedded in the rotor, the VMSM technology generates and controls its magnetic field in real time through power electronics and proprietary control algorithms.

The resulting motor architecture is brushless and slip-ring-free, while eliminating the need for magnets. According to Vimag Labs, the platform is designed to match or exceed the performance of permanent magnet solutions without relying on rare-earth magnets.
With the latest patent grant, Vimag Labs’ intellectual property portfolio now includes five granted patents, ten patents in the pipeline and fifteen trademarks filed. The portfolio covers areas including motor architecture, software controls, power electronics and application-specific implementations.
Vimag Labs Expands Commercial Deployment Plans
The latest patent comes as Vimag Labs scales its commercial deployment efforts. The company currently has active pilots under way with established two-wheeler and passenger car manufacturers. It plans to expand the technology into light commercial vehicles, commercial vehicles and high-power industrial systems ranging from 200 kW to 600 kW.
The company is also developing additional applications for the technology across robotics, defence and cooling systems.
For original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Vimag Labs says the platform offers two key advantages: lower motor costs and reduced exposure to supply-chain risks associated with rare-earth magnets, the majority of which are currently sourced from China.
The technology also aligns with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives by supporting the indigenous development of critical electric motor technology.

Funding and Manufacturing Partnership
Vimag Labs recently raised USD 5 million in its Series A round led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate.
The company has also signed a manufacturing MoU with Jendamark Pvt. Ltd. to support the scale-up of VMSM production.
